■ Research Objectives
Our research focuses on voiding dysfunction that includes overactive bladder, detrusor underactivity, bladder dysfunction due to neurological dysfunction, and other forms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. We pursue the development of clinically effective therapies based on better understanding the fundamental neuro-urological properties and facilitating the clinical translation of potential therapies in patients. ■ Research Interests Optogenetics for Urinary Function Detrusor underactivity (DUA) refers to a symptom of prolonged and/or incomplete bladder voiding due to a contraction of reduced strength, which is often observed in various neurogenic and myogenic disorders or failures. Only the intermittent self-catheterization is currently known to be an effective method to empty bladder. Thus, our group pursue a new therapeutic method that enables to provide fundamental treatments incorporated with optogenetics. Bladder Neuromodulation The focus of our research involves the treatment of voiding dysfunction by electrical neuromodulation of nerve targets, such as sacral nerve and posterior tibial nerve. Currently, we are developing novel stimulation modalities, including invasive and noninvasive stimulation, aimed at improving the treatment efficacy. Computational modeling and in vivo experiments are being used to test novel stimulation modalities. Implantable Device Increasing demand for innovation in implantable medical devices is fueled by the growing aging population and the increased prevalence of chronic diseases.
